This publication was born out of a necessity for a place to tell transgender stories, and to showcase the lives of trans people on our own terms and without solely relating to the ‘tragedy’ of transition, or our untimely deaths. We acknowledge that not all gender diverse people feel represented by the term transgender, and we wholly accept works from any gender diverse person who feels that the theme issue is something that they can contribute an authentic and non cisgender experience to.
Transness to us here at The Lilac Journal is any understanding of your gender identity that defies cis hetero patriarchal norms and differs from the gender you were assigned by society. To any level of extremity. Whether or not you have medically transitioned does not matter, whether or not you experience dysphoria does not matter. Too many of our siblings have been told that they are not one of us simply because they have not suffered enough to ‘earn’ the title of transgender. This is not a space that abides that mindset. If you are happier and more yourself having transitioned in any capacity, you are trans enough, and your work is welcome here.
